Great Park Academy
A major milestone has been reached in the development of Newcastle Great Park, with new football, rugby and cricket pitches and a grass running track formally handed over to Newcastle City Council. The facilities will primarily serve Great Park Academy, with plans to make them available for community use in the future.
New outdoor sports facilities built on land to the north of the former Sage headquarters in Newcastle Great Park have now been formally handed over to Newcastle City Council.
The announcement was made by the Newcastle Great Park (NGP) Consortium, which has delivered the playing fields as part of the area's continuing development.
The completed facilities represent a significant addition to the sporting infrastructure available to Great Park Academy and could eventually benefit local football teams, rugby clubs, cricket groups and other community organisations.
While the playing fields are intended primarily for use by academy pupils, the Consortium has confirmed that arrangements are planned to allow wider community access and hire.
However, the new pitches are not yet being advertised for public booking, and no confirmed date for community availability has been announced.
What sports facilities have been built?
The development includes a range of outdoor sports facilities designed to support different age groups and sporting activities.
The new playing fields provide:
Rugby union pitch – Providing dedicated grass facilities for rugby.
Senior football pitch – A full-size pitch suitable for senior football.
Under-15/Under-16 football pitch – Designed for younger age-group football.
Cricket field – Providing a dedicated area for cricket.
Grass running track – A 400-metre running track supporting athletics and physical education.
Together, the facilities provide Great Park Academy with additional space for physical education lessons, extracurricular activities and organised sport.
The variety of pitches also means that pupils can participate in several different sports without relying entirely on indoor facilities or travelling to other locations.
For an area that has continued to grow in population, the additional playing fields represent a welcome expansion of local recreational infrastructure.
Where are the new playing fields located?
The new facilities have been constructed on land immediately north of the former Sage building, close to Wagonway Drive in Newcastle Great Park.
The location forms part of the wider development area previously identified as Cell B1.
Plans for sports pitches in this part of Great Park have been in development for several years.
The Newcastle Great Park Consortium previously outlined proposals for the playing fields as part of its wider programme of infrastructure improvements, alongside landscaping and pedestrian access enhancements.
The latest announcement confirms that construction of the sports facilities has progressed to the important milestone of formal handover to Newcastle City Council.
The announcement does not specify when the playing fields will first be used for lessons or competitive fixtures.
Supporting Great Park Academy pupils
The pitches have been developed primarily to support Great Park Academy, which moved into its permanent school building in September 2025.
The academy, operated by the Gosforth Group multi-academy trust, provides education for children and young people living in Newcastle Great Park and surrounding communities.
Its permanent school building was developed to accommodate up to 1,200 pupils.
The new playing fields will complement the academy's existing educational facilities by providing dedicated outdoor spaces for sport and exercise.
Access to suitable sports facilities is an important part of school life, supporting physical fitness, teamwork, wellbeing and participation in extracurricular activities.
Football, rugby, cricket and athletics offer different opportunities for pupils to develop their skills and interests.
The inclusion of a dedicated grass running track is particularly notable, giving the school additional options for athletics activities.
With the land now formally handed over, the development has moved a step closer to fulfilling its intended role in supporting the academy.
Will Great Park residents be able to use the pitches?
This is likely to be one of the biggest questions for local families and sports clubs.
The answer is that community access is planned, but the arrangements have not yet been finalised.
According to the Newcastle Great Park Consortium, the pitches will primarily be used by Great Park Academy.
However, there is an intention to make the facilities available for community use and hire in due course, alongside other academy facilities.
This could eventually create additional opportunities for local football and rugby teams, cricket clubs, athletics groups and other organisations seeking sports facilities in the area.
It may also reduce the need for some groups to travel outside Newcastle Great Park for suitable training or match venues.
Nevertheless, the Consortium has not yet announced:
The date community bookings will begin.
Which of the new pitches will be available to hire.
The days and times available for community use.
Hire charges or booking conditions.
Whether individual residents will be able to book facilities or whether access will be limited to organised groups.
These details will need to be confirmed before residents and clubs can make plans to use the new pitches.
Importantly, the formal handover should not be interpreted as permission for unrestricted public access to the playing fields.
Residents should await confirmation of the relevant arrangements.
How will residents be able to book?
Great Park Academy already operates a wider facilities-hire programme through the Gosforth Group.
The academy's existing booking information explains that school facilities can be made available outside teaching hours for sports clubs, community organisations, businesses and other groups.
Facilities across the wider Gosforth Group include sports halls, courts, pitches and meeting spaces.
However, the newly handed-over playing fields are not yet specifically confirmed as available to book.
The Newcastle Great Park Consortium says further details about their availability and booking arrangements will be published through Great Park Academy's website.
Residents and clubs interested in using the pitches are encouraged to monitor the official page:

A long-awaited part of Great Park's infrastructure
The handover represents another stage in the delivery of facilities associated with Newcastle Great Park's development.
The NGP Consortium, comprising housebuilders Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon Homes, has been responsible for delivering major elements of the area's residential and supporting infrastructure.
The playing fields were included in earlier development plans for the land north of the former Sage building.
In its previous project information, the Consortium explained that the pitches would be created to serve the new secondary school, with wider community access anticipated through appropriate agreements.
Newcastle City Council's earlier planning documents also identified the potential for community use of the pitches outside school hours and term time.
The latest handover is therefore an important step towards delivering a facility that was envisaged as part of the wider development.
However, the practical arrangements for community access remain a separate stage.
What could this mean for local sports clubs?
The potential for future community access could be particularly valuable to clubs operating in Newcastle Great Park, Gosforth, Kingston Park and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Suitable outdoor pitches can be an important consideration for growing grassroots clubs, particularly those supporting junior teams or running regular training sessions.
The availability of pitches suitable for different age groups could potentially provide more flexibility for football clubs.
Meanwhile, rugby and cricket facilities would offer opportunities for sports that require dedicated playing areas.
The grass running track could also support organised athletics and fitness activities, subject to whatever community-use arrangements are introduced.
Of course, the precise benefits will depend on the eventual booking arrangements, availability and pricing.
Until these are published, it is not possible to say which clubs or organisations will be able to use the facilities.
How do the pitches compare with Great Park Community Centre?
Newcastle Great Park already benefits from outdoor sporting facilities at Great Park Community Centre on Roseden Way.
The community centre offers football pitches, a 3G five-a-side pitch and outdoor multi-use sports courts.
These facilities are separate from the newly completed Great Park Academy playing fields.
The academy development could eventually complement those existing amenities by adding further grass pitches and opportunities for rugby, cricket and athletics.
For residents, the distinction is important: facilities that are already bookable through Great Park Community Centre are not the same as the new Academy pitches, whose community access arrangements have yet to be confirmed.

What happens next?
The formal handover of the playing fields marks a completed stage in their development, but further information is still needed about how the facilities will operate.
Great Park Academy's use of the pitches will take priority.
The next important development for residents will be confirmation of the arrangements allowing community groups to access the site outside school use.
That will include the availability of particular pitches, booking procedures, terms of use and any applicable charges.
The Newcastle Great Park Consortium has advised residents to monitor the Academy's website for further announcements.
For local clubs interested in using the facilities, it may be worthwhile reviewing the existing Gosforth Group hire information ahead of the new pitches becoming available.
Another milestone for Newcastle Great Park
The latest announcement marks a positive development in the continuing delivery of educational and community infrastructure across Newcastle Great Park.
The construction of the playing fields has provided dedicated sporting space to support Great Park Academy and its pupils.
Looking ahead, the proposed introduction of community hire could expand opportunities for local sports clubs and residents to participate in outdoor activities closer to home.
However, the most significant unanswered question is when local organisations will be able to start using the facilities.
The Great Park Gazette will report further confirmed developments as the booking arrangements become available.
Would your local football, rugby, cricket or athletics club be interested in using the new Great Park Academy playing fields?
We would welcome residents' views through the Great Park Residents Group, particularly from local sports clubs looking for additional training or match facilities.
