Follow-up update – Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service

Following last night’s community meeting with Northumbria Police and Newcastle City Council’s EPiC team, I also wanted to share a positive update from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

As part of the concerns raised around anti-social behaviour, fires in Havannah Nature Reserve, and the importance of early intervention with young people, I had also copied Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service into the original correspondence.

They have responded and confirmed that they already provide education to schools around anti-social behaviour and deliberate fires.

This is really positive, because one of the main things residents have been asking for is early education and prevention rather than simply waiting until behaviour escalates.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that:

• They offer all secondary schools a classroom-based session relating to anti-social behaviour and deliberate fires for all Year 7 pupils.

• They also invite all Year 6 classes to their interactive Safety Centre.

• The Safety Centre includes representatives from the Police, RNLI and Nexus.

• Sessions cover anti-social behaviour, the dangers of deliberate fires, home fire safety, water safety, internet safety and other important topics.

This is reassuring, particularly given the concerns residents have raised about deliberate fires, the risk to Havannah Nature Reserve, the impact on wildlife, and the potential danger to nearby homes during dry weather.

For transparency, I have included the full email below.

FULL EMAIL FROM TYNE AND WEAR FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

Hi Steven

I have been forwarded your email from my colleagues regarding the issues you are having in your area and asked to provide an update on our current offer.

We currently offer all Secondary Schools a classroom-based session relating to ASB Deliberate fires for all pupils in Year 7, as well as a range of other sessions which can be found here - Educational Programmes – Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service

We also invite all Year 6 classes to our interactive Safety Centre which includes representatives from the Police, RNLI and Nexus. Sessions cover a range of topics including ASB and the dangers of deliberate fires, and a range of other topics including home fire safety, water safety and internet safety.

I hope this helps
